Nationally, the employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations: 12 percent from 2012 to 2022. The increase is projected due to enrollment increases as well as declines in student-teacher ratios.
At home, Arizona is expected to see one of the largest percentage increases of prekindergarten through grade 12 enrollment in the nation with 21 percent. To fill those spots, some Arizona schools are looking to other states. Of the schools that recruit out-of-state, 38 percent do so for quantity and quality of teachers and 35 percent say there are not enough candidates to choose from in Arizona.
