Mentor Institute: Foundational Coaching for Impact

This four-day series is designed to meet the unique needs of Arizona mentors and coaches by utilizing the New Teacher Center's mentoring and coaching philosophy and researched-based model.

Participants will learn research-based strategies on how to take an inquiry stance when supporting beginning teachers through strategic ways to build relationships rooted in trust and confidentiality through entry points and coaching cycles. Participants will also utilize coaching language to speak about teaching and learning in the continued pursuit of improved teacher practice, leading to increased student learning.

Mentor Institute Foundations provides guided practice in the New Teacher Center's tools and is sequenced to build the knowledge, skills, and understanding, all of which are critical, for new teacher mentors and coaches, in a range of program contexts.

Through research-based strategies, participants will:

  • Examine the purpose of coaching and how it supports effective conditions for student learning;
  • Identify the components of Optimal Learning Environments and the knowledge and skills teachers need to create them;
  • Apply foundational coaching tools, protocols, and language throughout the Teaching and Coaching Cycle to advance teacher practice and student learning; and
  • Analyze the Teaching and Coaching Cycle and the role of understanding students, standards, and tasks within the cycle.
