New Teacher Support
Building the Future of Teachers in Arizona
Supporting teachers across the professional continuum is a cornerstone of our work. We believe by supporting beginning teachers, we are working to build the future of teacher leadership in our state.
Our New Teacher Support provides mentors and coaches with research-based tools to support those newest to the profession. We emphasize strengthening autonomy and self-efficacy within teachers to support Arizona's students.
In collaboration with mentors/coaches (leaders) in this work, we were able to capture the reflections and steps taken to impact change in the work of induction and mentoring. Since 2006, the Arizona K12 Center has been home to Arizona’s Master Teacher Program, designed to
build capacity for teacher leadership while providing support to the newest members of our profession. While this program has experienced some changes over the years, it has always stayed true to its goals:
• fostering a spirit of accomplishment among Arizona’s teachers;
• recognizing the contribution of excellent teaching in our communities, and elevating the status of the profession; and
• designating or placing a Master Teacher mentor in schools throughout Arizona, beginning with those in greatest need.
Now called the Arizona Teacher Program, the work of the program is comprehensive in nature providing training for mentors, new teachers, and leaders. Through opportunities for learning and networking, our belief is that districts can build sustainable induction programs that support all teachers on the career continuum from new teacher to teacher leader.
