Brace Yourself for 9 Activities Because Winter is Coming…




  1. This video from Khan Academy explains why the Earth’s tilt causes seasons.

  2. Here’s a short article (four paragraphs!) from Scholastic explaining what solstices are.

  3. There are 24 different time zones across the world. This year, Winter Solstice will take place in the Northern Hemisphere at 3:23 p.m. on Friday, December 21. What time will that be around the world? Try this worksheet.

  4. Celebrate Winter Solstice with these cute DIY paper cup luminaries.

  5. Encourage students to practice their graphing skills by plotting sunrise, sunset, and moonrise data.

  6. What do other countries and cultures do to celebrate? Here are four other rituals from around the world.

  7. What do animals do during winter? Adapt, of course! Check out these eight ways they survive.

  8. Reinforce your students’ knowledge of symmetry. Give them an opportunity to design, plan, and build their own snowflake structure using these directions.
