Objectives
  • The student will plan a road trip to a city in Arizona.
  • The student will calculate mileage from the city where they live to the city they plan to visit.
  • The student will estimate and calculate expenses for their trip.
  • The student will research points of interest at their destination.
  • The student will identify the geographical region for the city.
  • The student will present their road trip to an audience.
Procedure
  1. Students will work in groups of 2-3. Each group will be assigned a city in Arizona. Suggested cities: (Tucson, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Yuma, Williams, Tombstone, Prescott, Page, Jerome, Winslow, Lake Havasu City, Show Low, Payson, Nogales)
  2. Groups will plan a trip to the city and research the following:
    1. Map the route to the destination and determine round-trip mileage.
    2. Identify the region for the city.
    3. Choose 2 attractions/points of interest to visit and explain why they were selected.
    4. Include entrance fees / admission if needed.
    5. Choose lodging for 2 nights (under $150 per night) and calculate the cost.
    6. Calculate food costs for 2 people - breakfast, lunch, dinner for 2 days.
      1. $=10 per person
      2. $$=20 per person
      3. $$$=30 per person
      4. $$$$=40 per person
    7. Calculate expenses for gas (round-trip, based on 23 miles per gallon.)
    8. Determine how much money you will need for an emergency fund. What might it be used for?
    9. Locate 3-4 copyright friendly images to use (remember to cite your sources.)
  3. The teacher will demonstrate how to use Google Maps to locate the destination, directions, and mileage.
  4. The teacher will demonstrate how to create a simple spreadsheet and summary graph.
  5. Groups will create a travel spreadsheet and graph to summarize expenses. Include categories for gas, lodging, food, attractions, emergency fund.
  6. Teacher will demonstrate how to create a presentation with slides, text, images.
  7. Each group will construct a digital presentation to share with the class and/or on the class web site.
  8. Presentation will include:
    1. Slide 1: Names of your team, city, region, image
    2. Slide 2: Map of route and round trip miles.
    3. Slide 3: Attraction 1 with image. Why did you choose this attraction?
    4. Slide 4: Attraction 2 with image. Why did you choose this attraction?
    5. Slide 5: Chart/graph of your expenses.
      1. What was your estimate of expenses?
      2. What was your actual total?
      3. Which category did you spend the most on?
    6. Slide 6: Conclusion - What did your team learn from this activity?
Materials
Assessment
  • Teams will be assessed on the following:
    • Spreadsheet accuracy – (gas, lodging, etc.)
    • Visuals of spreadsheet chart, map, location
    • Required content in presentation
