Objectives
  • Students will organize information about rocks into major topics using a graphic organizer
Procedure
  1. Students start a Bubbl.us or another graphic organizer with three headings: Metamorphic, Igneous, Sedimentary.
  2. Students watch video on rock types.
  3. Using the graphic organizer, students take notes of the various types of rocks.
  4. After video, students use "pairs check" to compare notes in pairs to verify completeness.
  5. Teacher/students conduct discussion about each type of rock and the formation of each, and compare and contrast each.
Materials
  • Paper for graphic organizer, pencil
  • Projector/Speaker setup
  • Internet connection
  • Bubbl.us, Internet mind-mapping tool
  • Teacher computer
Assessment
  • Teacher observes through discussion, and assesses the graphic organizer for completeness. Students use Venn diagram to compare/contrast two of the types of rocks.
Alternative Assessment
  • Teacher can download the Blackline Masters from the Discovery Education Video Series linked above, and use the pre/post test as well as other materials.
