Take One!
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards designed Take One!® as a professional development opportunity for educators interested in exploring a portion of National Board Certification. Take One!® improves teacher quality by providing teachers with the opportunity to reflect on their own classroom instructional practices within the context of national teaching standards. Take One!® allows all teachers to “sample” National Board Certification—not only to improve their teaching practices within their classrooms and schools, but also to begin the path toward National Board candidacy, if they so choose. Take One!® aligns practice to professional teaching standards through identifying evidence of student learning and making the critical link between teaching practice and student learning gains (NBPTS, retrieved 2008).
The Arizona K12 Center has designed a system of support for school and district cohorts interested in pursuing Take One! as a job-embedded professional learning experience. Through an innovative curriculum designed to foster collegial interactions, cohorts will delve into the Five Core Propositions and the National Board Teaching Standards. They will identify the impact instructional decisions have on student achievement and how to provide supporting evidence of their practice through analysis of student work and videotape.
Participants in Take One! experience professional learning that is meaningful and richly rewarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. As a Take One! participant, teachers will describe, analyze and reflect on their teaching practice and submit their writing to be scored by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Upon receiving scores, participants have the option of pursuing full certification within two subsequent years following the scoring of their entry.
