Seventh Annual Teacher Leadership Institute Preconference: Teacher Documentaries: Changing the Dialogue Around Teaching in America

American Teacher is a compelling documentary that reveals the frustrating realities of today's educators. This film explores the difficulty of attracting talented new teachers and reveals why so many of our best teachers leave the profession feeling under-compensated and under-valued.

Mitchell 20: Teacher Quality is the Answer shares the story of one teacher who set out to change her school. Little did Daniela Robles know she was starting a movement that would inspire others and change schools in Arizona and around the country.

Together, these documentaries provide a compelling canvas to examine contemporary problems and solutions in education.  In this two-day preconference, participants will have a chance to view the documentaries and dialogue writers/producers, featured teachers and policy experts focused on the same goal, Changing the Dialogue about Teaching in America

Keynote speakers, Nineve Calegari, co-writer/producer of American Teacher, and Kathy Wiebke, co-producer of Mitchell 20: Teacher Quality is the Answer will provide intriguing back stories into the lives of the teachers and the powerful work they do.

Afternoon breakout sessions will prompt participants to engage in deep conversations around these five emerging themes.

  • Teaching as a Profession
  • Finding Teacher Voice
  • Conditions for Teaching and Learning
  • Teacher Leadership
  • Professional Development

Learning each day will conclude with a call to action, providing opportunities for educators to bridge their own learning and determine ways they can step up, speak out, and be the spark for change in their own learning communities.
