Delicious.com is an online and social bookmarking service. It's social because the thousands of people who use it openly share their bookmarks with others. Delicious is home to the largest collection of bookmarks on the web, and that collection is searchable. In fact, it's a great idea to search Delicious when teachers are looking for online resources. The search results are websites that actual humans took the time to bookmark. This is different from Google since their results are based on backlinks. Watch my short infomercial to see how searching Delicious.com can make your life better.
Here's the transcript of the infomercial.
Spending time searching Google for educational resources can draining. Often the best websites are buried in advertisements, useless blog post links, and link farms. When a site appears at the top of Google's results, it only means that page has a high PageRank; there's no guarantee that real people recommend those sites.
You can find relief from exhausting Google results by searching Delicious.com Delicious is an online and social bookmarking site. Thousands of people, many of whom are educators, add their favorite websites to Delicious. That means when you search using Delicious, you're searching through sites that people liked so much they bookmarked them.
Here's how to search the biggest collection of bookmarks in the universe...
Go to Delicious.com in your web browser. Enter a search. See the results. You can see the site title, URL, and the number of users who have bookmarked the site. The more bookmarks, the more useful that site probably is. You also see tags. Users can tag a site with as many keywords as they like.
Of course you can click the site to go to it.
Or, you can click the number of bookmarks to see what people have written about the site and see their tags.
Or, you can click a tag to see other top-bookmarked sites that share that same tag.
You can click a user's name to see all of their bookmarks.
Delicious is a great way for teachers to discover websites, particularly sites for student to use.
Give searching Delicious a try and you just might also start using it for your own bookmarks as well!
Delicious is such an awesome tool for an educator, especially when looking for sites to use for interactive whiteboards! What better way to "discover" new and useful sites than to check out what other people have already found useful?
Another great resource for teachers using delicious is the wiki http://delicious4teachers.pbworks.com/
It is a great list of educators using delicious and categorized by grade level or district role (media specialist, administrator, 3rd grade teacher, college educator, etc). You can click on any user's delicious profile to see what sites they found useful! I would encourage any educator to check out delicious (it has made a huge difference to me!) and I would also encourage any educator using delicious to consider joining the wiki!
